StoryMiles™
Privacy Policy
Last Updated: October 16, 2026
Effective Date: October 16, 2026
Son of a Good Man LLC, a California limited liability company (“Company,” “we,” “our,” or “us”), operates the StoryMiles mobile application (the “App” or “Service”). StoryMiles pairs podcasts and audio stories with the real places they are about, helps you plan a road trip around them, announces stops as you drive, and keeps a private journal of the trip.
This Privacy Policy explains what information StoryMiles handles, where it goes, how long it is kept, and the choices you have. It describes what the App actually does today. If that changes, we will update this policy first.
This policy works together with the StoryMiles Terms of Service. Other Son of a Good Man LLC products and our website have their own policies.
Summary
This summary is here to help you read the rest. It does not replace the full policy below.
- No account needed. You can browse stories, plan trips, listen and keep a journal without signing in. That data stays on your phone.
- If you sign in with Apple or Google, your trips, journal, saved stories and settings sync to your private account so you can use them on another phone.
- Your location during a drive stays on your phone. StoryMiles uses it to announce upcoming stops and does not record where you have been. The places you check in to and the notes you write keep their location, and those sync if you are signed in.
- Some features send locations to Google, through our server, to find places along your route and work out drive times.
- Podcasts stream straight from their publishers, whose hosts can see your IP address, as with any podcast app.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking, no AI, no microphone. We do not sell or share your personal information.
- You are in control. You can delete trips, entries or your whole account in the App, and you can ask us for a copy of your data at any time.
1. Using StoryMiles Without an Account
You do not need an account to browse stories, plan and run trips, hear stop announcements, listen to episodes, or write in your journal. Without an account, your trips, journal entries and photos, saved stories, listening history, downloads and settings are stored only on your device. We do not receive them.
Even without an account, a few features have to contact other services to work. These are described in sections 3 to 5: streaming episodes from podcast publishers, searching for places along your route, showing live place details and maps, looking up addresses, and checking your StoryMiles Plus status.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Your Account
Accounts are optional. You can sign in with Apple or with Google. Sign-in is handled by Supabase, Inc., our account and database provider. We receive:
- Your name, if you choose to share it
- Your email address, or an Apple private relay address if you use “Hide My Email”
- A unique account identifier from Apple or Google
We never receive your Apple or Google password.
2.2 What Syncs When You Are Signed In
While you are signed in, StoryMiles copies the following to your private account so it can be restored on another device:
- Trips: the title, the stories you chose, your starting point, the stops and their locations, dates, overnight stops, which stops you visited or skipped and when, drive times, and which episodes you listened to on which part of the trip
- Journal entries: your notes, ratings, favorites, the prompts you answered, the stop they belong to, and their location (see section 3)
- Saved stories
- Settings: your home base (a place name and its location), your saved destinations, the kinds of detours you like, the app you prefer to listen in, and whether announcements and automatic check-ins are on
Your general listening history (which episodes you have heard, outside of a trip) and your downloaded episodes stay on your device and are not synced.
When you delete a trip or a journal entry while signed in, it is removed from every device. Its content is erased from our servers at that point. We keep only an empty marker with its ID and the time it was deleted, so that it does not reappear from another phone, until you delete your account. The photos in a deleted trip or entry are deleted too (section 2.3).
2.3 Journal Photos
When you take or choose a photo for your journal, StoryMiles saves its own copy in the App’s storage on your device. If you are signed in and have StoryMiles Plus, that copy is also backed up to a private storage area in your account, so it is not lost if you change phones. Photos are uploaded as they are saved on your device, which may include details your camera adds, such as when and where a photo was taken.
When you delete a memory or a trip, StoryMiles warns you first and then deletes its photos, both the copy on your phone and the backup. Photos you remove from a memory are deleted in the same way. If your phone is offline at that moment, the backup copy is deleted when you delete your account, at the latest. The original in your Photos library is never touched; StoryMiles only ever works with its own copies.
StoryMiles asks for camera or photo library access only when you add a photo, and only uses the photos you pick.
2.4 Place Suggestions
If you are signed in, you can suggest a place connected to a story. We receive what you enter: the show, the episode, the place name, an address, why it matters and a link. If you tell us you make the show, you can also give a contact email so we can follow up and credit you. Suggestions are linked to your account, and we review each one by hand before anything is added to the App.
2.5 Support Messages
If you contact us by email or through our website, we receive your name, email address and whatever you choose to tell us.
2.6 Purchases
StoryMiles Plus is bought through Apple. Apple processes the payment; we never receive your card number or billing address. We use RevenueCat, Inc. to check whether you have Plus. RevenueCat receives a random identifier for your purchases (or your StoryMiles account identifier, if you are signed in, so Plus follows you to a new phone), your purchase and renewal history, and basic device and app information such as your device model, operating system, app version, country and IP address.
2.7 Technical Information
When the App talks to our server (for example, to sync or to search along your route), our hosting provider keeps standard, short-lived request logs, such as the time and IP address of a request, to keep the service running and secure. We do not use these logs to build a profile of you.
3. Location
Location is central to StoryMiles, so here is exactly how it is used. StoryMiles only uses your location if you allow it, and you can change that at any time in your device’s Settings.
3.1 During a Trip
When you start a trip, StoryMiles watches your location to tell you when a stop is coming up, to offer to check you in when you arrive, and to show the next stop on your Lock Screen. If you allow “Always” location access (“Allow all the time” on Android), this continues in the background while your phone is locked or connected to CarPlay. iPhone shows a location indicator while this is happening; Android shows a notification.
This check happens entirely on your device. StoryMiles does not record a history of where you have been, and your moving location during a drive is not sent to us or anyone else. Location tracking stops when the trip ends.
3.2 Locations That Are Saved
Some locations become part of your trip or journal:
- When you check in at a stop (or StoryMiles checks you in, if you turned on automatic check-in), the stop is marked as visited with the time, and an arrival entry is added to your journal with the stop’s location.
- When you write a journal note that isn’t tied to a stop, and you have already allowed location access, the note is tagged with your current location. StoryMiles never asks for location just to save a note.
- When you add a stop where you are, it is saved with your current location.
- If you set your home base using your current location, StoryMiles saves that location and the name of your city.
These are stored on your device and, if you are signed in, synced to your account as described in section 2.2.
3.3 Locations Sent to Other Services
- “Along the way” search. When you look for gas, restrooms, food or sights along your route, StoryMiles sends the stretch of road you are searching to our server. During a drive, that stretch starts at your current location. Our server asks Google Places for results and sends them back. This works without an account.
- Drive times. To show real driving times, StoryMiles sends the locations of your starting point and stops to our server, which asks Google Routes. This requires an account and StoryMiles Plus.
- Place details. To show ratings, opening hours and accessibility for places in the App, StoryMiles sends the names and locations of those places (not your own location) to our server, which asks Google Places.
- Address lookups. When you type a destination or address, or use your current location to name your home base or a new stop, your device’s built-in location service looks it up. That is Apple on iPhone and Google on Android.
- Directions. If you open directions in Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze, or search for places to stay, the destination (and sometimes your starting point and stops) is passed to that app or website.
The first three features only run where the App shows Google maps, because Google’s information is only shown alongside a Google map. Our server passes these requests to Google and returns the answer. It does not store the locations.
3.4 Your Location Choices
You can choose “Never,” “While Using” or “Always” for StoryMiles in your device’s Settings, and change it at any time. Without “Always,” stop announcements and automatic check-ins only work while the App is open. Without any location access, you can still browse, plan, listen and write in your journal.
4. Podcasts and Audio
StoryMiles does not host any podcast. When you play an episode, it streams directly from the web address the publisher lists in its public podcast feed. That address usually belongs to the publisher’s hosting company (such as Art19, Omny Studio or Megaphone) and often passes through measurement services the publisher has chosen (such as Podtrac, Magellan AI, Podscribe, Claritas or Spotify). Like any podcast app, this means those companies receive your IP address, your device’s user agent and which episode you requested. Publishers use this to count downloads and, in some cases, for their own advertising. Their privacy policies apply. We do not add anything to these requests and do not receive any information back from them.
Some shows are not on a public feed. For those, StoryMiles opens the episode in another app, such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts or Audible, and that app’s privacy policy applies.
If you download a story for listening without signal, the episodes are saved on your device. You can remove them at any time.
Stop announcements are spoken by your device’s built-in text-to-speech. The text is not sent anywhere. StoryMiles does not use your microphone and does not record audio.
StoryMiles is not affiliated with the podcasts it features unless we say so.
5. Google Services
StoryMiles uses Google Maps Platform from Google LLC:
- Maps. Where maps are shown with Google Maps, Google’s map software runs inside the App and receives information such as your device type, IP address and the map area you are viewing, and your location if you have allowed it and the map is showing where you are. Where Google Maps is not used, iPhone shows Apple Maps instead, under Apple’s privacy policy, and the Google features in section 3.3 are switched off.
- Places and Routes, through our server, as described in section 3.3.
- Google Sign-In, if you choose to sign in with Google.
Google’s use of this information is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
6. What We Don’t Do
- We do not show ads.
- We do not use analytics, crash-reporting or advertising tools in the App.
- We do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and we do not use your device’s advertising identifier.
- We do not sell your personal information, or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- We do not use AI or machine learning on your data, and we do not use your data to train any AI model.
- We do not use your microphone.
- We do not build profiles of you or draw inferences about you.
- We do not read your journal, photos or trips, except when you ask us for help and give permission, or when the law requires it.
7. How We Use Your Information
We use the information above only to:
- Provide StoryMiles and its features
- Sync and back up your trips, journal and settings when you are signed in
- Confirm your StoryMiles Plus status
- Review place suggestions and follow up with podcasters
- Answer support requests
- Keep the Service secure and prevent abuse
- Comply with legal obligations
We do not use your information for any other purpose without telling you first and, where the law requires it, asking for your consent.
8. How We Share Information
8.1 Service Providers
We use these providers to run StoryMiles. Each receives only what it needs, and may use it only to provide its service to us:
- Supabase, Inc. — sign-in, the database for your synced data, private photo storage, and the server that talks to Google
- Google LLC — maps, place search and details, drive times, and Google Sign-In (section 5)
- RevenueCat, Inc. — StoryMiles Plus status (section 2.6)
- Apple Inc. — App Store purchases, Sign in with Apple, and, on iPhone, Apple Maps and address lookups
8.2 At Your Direction
When you play an episode, open directions or open another app, the podcast hosts and apps described in sections 3.3 and 4 receive information because you asked StoryMiles to contact them.
8.3 Shared Trip Links
You can share a trip by sending a link. The whole plan travels inside the link itself: the trip title, the stories, your starting point and its location, and the stops. We do not store shared trips. Shared links look like https://www.sonofagoodman.com/storymiles/shared#…, and the trip sits after the “#”, a part of a link that browsers never send to a website, so our servers never receive it. Anyone who has the link can see what is in it, so if your trip starts at home, you may want to change the starting point before you share. Shared links never include your journal, photos or account details.
8.4 Legal Requirements
We may disclose information if we believe it is required to comply with law or legal process, protect our rights, investigate fraud or abuse, or protect someone’s safety.
8.5 Business Transfers
If Son of a Good Man LLC is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, user information may be transferred as part of that transaction. The new owner will have to honor this policy for information it receives, and we will notify you of any material change in ownership or privacy practices where required by law.
9. Security
- Data is encrypted in transit between the App and our providers.
- Supabase encrypts stored data at rest.
- Our database uses row-level security, so each person’s trips, journal, saved stories, settings and suggestions can be read only by that person’s account.
- Journal photos are kept in a private storage area that only your account can open. When the App shows a backed-up photo, it uses a link that expires after one hour.
No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you as the law requires.
10. Data Retention and Deletion
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy. In short:
- On your device: stays there until you delete it or remove the App.
- Your account and synced data: kept while your account is active, and deleted when you delete your account. Copies in our provider’s backups are deleted within 30 days after that.
- Deleted trips and journal entries: their content is erased from our servers when you delete them, leaving only an empty marker until you delete your account (section 2.2).
- Journal photos: StoryMiles’s copies, on your phone and in your backup, are kept until you remove them from a memory, or delete the memory, its trip or your account. Originals in your Photos library are never touched.
- Place suggestions: kept with your account until you delete it. Accepted suggestions that are already part of the App remain as places, but are no longer connected to you.
- Purchase records held by Apple and RevenueCat: kept for up to 7 years for accounting and tax purposes.
- Support emails: kept for up to 3 years from your last message.
- Server request logs: short-lived, kept only as long as our hosting provider needs them to run and secure the service.
- Locations sent to Google through our server: not stored by us at all.
10.1 Deleting Your Account
You can delete your account at any time in the App: go to Profile and choose to delete your account. You can keep your trips on your phone or erase them from your phone as well. Deleting your account immediately removes your backed-up photos, your account, and your synced trips, journal entries, saved stories, settings and place suggestions from our database.
If you signed in with Apple, StoryMiles asks you to confirm with Apple once more when you delete your account on iPhone, so that it can tell Apple to revoke StoryMiles’s access to your Apple sign-in. If you cancel that step, your account is still deleted, and you can remove StoryMiles yourself in your Apple Account settings under Sign in with Apple.
You can also ask us to delete your account at sonofagoodman.com/request-account-deletion or by emailing support@sonofagoodman.com. We will complete the deletion within 30 days.
Deleting your account does not cancel StoryMiles Plus. Cancel it in your Apple ID subscription settings.
11. Your Privacy Rights and Choices
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete your information
You can also stop syncing at any time by signing out, and turn off location, camera and photo access in your device’s Settings.
To make a request, email support@sonofagoodman.com from the email address on your account, or use the in-app and web deletion options in section 10.1. We will respond within 45 days, or tell you if we need more time and why, as the law allows. If we decline your request, we will explain why, and you can appeal by replying to our answer with “Appeal” in the subject line. Someone who did not make the original decision will review it and reply within 45 days.
12. California Privacy Notice
This section applies to California residents and supplements the rest of this policy. It is our notice at collection under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, the “CCPA”). The words used here have the meanings the CCPA gives them.
12.1 Notice at Collection: What We Collect and Why

12.2 How Long We Keep Each Category
- Identifiers and personal records: while your account is active, then deleted with your account (provider backups within 30 days). Support emails are kept up to 3 years from your last message. Identifiers in purchase records are kept with those records.
- Commercial information: up to 7 years, for accounting and tax purposes.
- Network activity: request logs are short-lived; device and app details held by RevenueCat are kept with your purchase records; trip listening details are kept with the trip.
- Geolocation: your moving location during a drive is never stored. Saved locations are kept with the trip, entry or setting they belong to, until you delete it or your account. Locations sent to Google through our server are not stored by us.
- Photos: until you remove them from a memory, or delete the memory, its trip or your account (section 2.3).
- Other information you give us: until you delete it or your account. Accepted place suggestions remain in the App without any link to you.
12.3 We Do Not Sell or Share Your Personal Information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We have not done so in the past 12 months, and we have no actual knowledge of selling or sharing the personal information of anyone under 16. Because there is nothing to opt out of, StoryMiles does not show a “Do Not Sell or Share” link.
12.4 Sensitive Personal Information
The only sensitive personal information StoryMiles collects is precise geolocation, and only when you allow location access. We use it only to provide the features you ask for, as described in section 3, and never to infer anything about you. Because we use it only in ways the CCPA permits without offering a right to limit, there is no separate “Limit the Use of My Sensitive Personal Information” link. You can still stop all location use at any time in your device’s Settings.
12.5 Your California Rights
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the categories of sources, the purposes, and the categories of third parties we disclose it to
- Delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to legal exceptions
- Correct inaccurate personal information
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information (we do neither)
- Limit the use of sensitive personal information (we already use it only as permitted, see section 12.4)
- Not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights
12.6 How to Submit a Request
Email support@sonofagoodman.com with “California Privacy Request” in the subject line and tell us which right you want to use. To delete your account, you can also use Profile in the App or sonofagoodman.com/request-account-deletion. We will confirm receipt within 10 business days and respond within 45 days, which we may extend once by another 45 days if we tell you why.
12.7 Verifying Your Request
To protect your information, we verify that a request comes from you. Usually that means you send it from, or confirm it through, the email address on your StoryMiles account. If you never created an account, your trips and journal stay on your device and we cannot see them. Apart from any emails you have sent us, the only records we could have are purchase records under a random identifier, which we cannot link to you without details you give us, such as your App Store receipt. We will only use information you give us for verification to verify your request.
12.8 Authorized Agents
You can have an authorized agent make a request for you. We will ask the agent for your signed permission, or a valid power of attorney, and we may ask you to confirm your identity with us directly.
12.9 Non-Discrimination
We will not deny you the Service, charge you a different price, or give you a different quality of service because you used your privacy rights.
12.10 “Shine the Light”
California Civil Code § 1798.83 lets California residents ask which personal information a business has disclosed to third parties for their direct marketing. We do not disclose personal information to anyone for their direct marketing. You can still ask us about this at support@sonofagoodman.com.
12.11 Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
StoryMiles is an app and contains no tracking, so it has nothing for a “Do Not Track” browser signal to switch off. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing for a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal to opt you out of either. If that ever changed, we would treat a GPC signal as a valid opt-out request, and we would update this policy first. Our website, including the page that opens shared trip links, is covered by the Son of a Good Man Privacy Policy.
13. EEA, UK and Swiss Residents
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, Son of a Good Man LLC is the controller of your personal information. You also have the right to restrict or object to certain processing, to data portability, to withdraw consent at any time, and to complain to your local data protection authority. We process your information to provide the Service you ask for (performance of a contract), on the basis of your consent (for example, location, camera and photo access), and for our legitimate interest in keeping the Service secure.
14. Children’s Privacy
StoryMiles is meant for adults: our Terms require users to be 18 or older, and children ride along with a parent or guardian who uses the App. StoryMiles is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have, we will delete it promptly. Parents or guardians who believe a child has given us information can contact support@sonofagoodman.com.
Some stories in StoryMiles cover true crime and other mature subjects. These are labelled in the App so families can choose what to listen to.
15. International Users
StoryMiles is operated from the United States, and our providers process data in the United States. If you use StoryMiles from elsewhere, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those where you live. Where the law requires it, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses in our providers’ data processing terms.
16. Third-Party Links and Apps
StoryMiles links to podcast apps, map apps, and the websites of places and shows. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties, and we encourage you to read their policies.
17. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the Last Updated date. If a change materially affects how we handle your information, we will tell you in the App before it takes effect, and we will ask for your consent where the law requires it. Continued use of StoryMiles after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
18. Trademark
StoryMiles™ and the StoryMiles logo are trademarks of Son of a Good Man LLC. Podcast names, artwork and other trademarks shown in the App belong to their owners.
